Resident care

Common maintenance topics.

Current residents can call the office for service needs or ask about common home-care topics.

Floor care and cleaning

Sweep or vacuum grit before mopping, wipe spills promptly, and use a damp mop with a mild cleaner made for the flooring surface. Avoid soaking floors, harsh scrub pads, and steam cleaners unless the product label specifically allows them.

Changing your furnace filter

Turn the heating or cooling system off, slide out the old filter, note the airflow arrow, and install the same-size replacement with the arrow pointing toward the furnace or blower. A common schedule is about every 60 days, but residents can call if they are unsure what size to use.

Changing your water filter

Use the filter made for your appliance model and follow the refrigerator instructions. After installing, run water through the dispenser until it clears and reset the appliance filter indicator if applicable. Upgraded appliance filters are typically purchased by the resident.

Caring for granite tops

Clean granite with a soft cloth and mild soap or stone-safe cleaner. Wipe up acidic spills like coffee, wine, tomato sauce, or citrus quickly, and use trivets or pads under hot cookware instead of placing it directly on the counter.

Adjusting cabinet doors

Seasonal temperature and humidity changes can shift cabinet doors slightly. Hinges often have adjustment screws for small alignment changes, but residents can ask Ambassador Homes for help if a door is rubbing, loose, or not closing correctly.

Cleaning a glass cooktop

Let the cooktop cool completely, then use a glass-cooktop cleaner with a non-scratch pad or cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and do not drag heavy pans across the surface. Clean spills before they are repeatedly heated onto the glass.

Testing the sump pump

Where a sump pump is present, keep the pit clear and listen for normal operation during heavy rain. A quick test can be done by adding enough water to lift the float and confirm the pump turns on, but call for service if it does not activate, runs constantly, or makes unusual noise.
